Elizabeth and Garrett first crossed paths during their military training course in Newport, Rhode Island, while both were in medical school in the summer of 2021. From the start, Garrett had his eye on Elizabeth, but she was in her own world (classic Elizabeth).

Fast forward over a year, and their paths crossed again as they headed to San Diego for their residency audition rotations—Garrett for Orthopedics and Elizabeth for OBGYN. As fate would have it, they were even on the same flight. This time, Garrett was hard to miss, sporting a bold Tiger Hawaiian shirt.

Through mutual friends, they spent several weekends together in San Diego. Elizabeth didn’t hold back on their first spontaneous date, asking Garrett some tough questions. It didn’t take long to realize they shared similar values and life goals. The connection grew quickly, and the following month, they both traveled to Walter Reed for another audition rotation. Despite knowing the residency match was just around the corner, they decided to take a leap of faith and officially started dating.

In December, they received the incredible news that they’d both head to Walter Reed for residency. They spent the rest of their fourth year enjoying time with friends and traveling before moving to Bethesda together that summer. It didn’t take long to realize that if they could survive starting a new life in a new city as surgical interns—and still like each other—this was the endgame.

Garrett planned a proposal at the end of their intern year in June, perfectly timed during a weekend with friends at Elizabeth’s family’s lake house. He told Elizabeth they were going on a “winery tour for her birthday.” True to form, she was less than thrilled about leaving their relaxing lake weekend but reluctantly agreed (okay, Garrett had to convince her). They arrived at Barboursville Winery, where Garrett had arranged a private proposal at the stunning ruins. It was an easy yes! They returned to the lake to celebrate with family and close friends.

Since then, Elizabeth and Garrett have continued navigating life and residency together, making the most of their limited free time. They often escape to their favorite place—Charlottesville, Virginia. It felt only natural to choose the Charlottesville area as their wedding location.
